The skin overview. Functions and components

Functions of the skin as the outer covering of a mammalian body.

As a result of discovering that every animal has skin, it is also important to look at the functions of the skin of animals

what makes the skin a sense organ

Protection: The skin acts as a protective barrier between the internal organs and the external environment. It helps prevent the entry of microorganisms, chemicals, and harmful substances into the body. The skin also protects against physical injuries, UV radiation, and dehydration.

Sensation: The skin contains a vast network of sensory receptors that allow us to perceive touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. These receptors help us interact with the world by providing information about our surroundings.

Regulation of body temperature: The skin plays a crucial role in maintaining body temperature within a narrow range. It does this through the process of thermoregulation.

When the body gets too hot, sweat glands in the skin produce sweat, which evaporates and cools the body. Conversely, when the body gets too cold, blood vessels near the skin\’s surface constrict, reducing heat loss.

Excretion: The skin helps eliminate certain waste products from the body. Small amounts of metabolic waste, such as urea and salts, are excreted through sweat.

Absorption: Certain substances can be absorbed through the skin, such as medications applied topically in the form of creams or patches.

The skin\’s outermost layer, the epidermis, provides a protective barrier, but some substances can still penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream.

Vitamin D synthesis: The skin plays a crucial role in the synthesis of vitamin D. When exposed to sunlight, a precursor molecule in the skin is converted into vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption and bone health.

Immune defence: The skin is an important component of the body\’s immune system. It contains specialized cells, such as Langerhans cells and immune cells, which help identify and eliminate pathogens that may breach the skin\’s protective barrier.

General functions of the animal skin

here lets discuss one of the main Functions of the skin. The mammalian skin and its function as follows

1. the skin Serves as protection for the body.

The skin protect the body against entrance by microbes, and injuries from mechanical services.

shield the body from ultraviolet rays of the sunlight and desiccation by acting as waterproof. and i this are the major Functions of the skin

The pigment known as Melani

absorbs ultraviolet rays from the Sun which is harmful to the body

2. The skin is used for excretion

Most important is the fact that the skin excrete excess water, mineral salts and some nitrogenous waste through the sweat gland as sweat

3. The skin serves as a major sense organ of the body

The skin is very sensitive to its environment through specialised sensory nerves endings scattered in the dermis

The skin is also sensitive to such stimulus as changes in temperature, pressure, pain and cold

4. The skin helps in the production of vitamin D.

For natural vitamin D production, the skin is called To Action

The skin uses infrared rays from the sunlight to produce vitamin D.

5. The skin helps in the production of milk

mammary gland of female animals which is a modification of the skin help in the production of milk which are used as food for feeding The Young Ones.

6. It serves as storage of food for the body.

Facts are stored under the dermis of mammals.

The stored fat serves as insulation to cool the body temperature

7. The skin regulates the body temperature..

animals are able to regulate their body temperature in their various habitats environment

Based on body temperature vertebrate can be grouped into two categories of animals. they’re poikilothermic and homoiothermic animals
